For Authors

Why Journey Fiction?

I'm Jennifer Farey, the founder of Journey Fiction and a published author. My experience writing for other companies taught me a lot about what I do and don't like in the publishing process. I started Journey because I want to discover new voices and help them find their readers.

With so many options for writers today, why would you want to publish with Journey? Maybe because:

  • You don't want to wait two or more years between submitting your completed manuscript and seeing your novel for sale.

  • You don't have an agent but are ready to submit.

  • You want to have input on cover design and editing decisions.

  • You want to be part of a publishing community that supports its members and values open communication.

If you relate to one or more of the above reasons, Journey Fiction may be the place for you.

What Do We Do For You?

We're a small company, but we treat authors like the big deal they are. Here are our responses to the questions authors ask most often:

  • How much does it cost to publish with Journey? Nothing! We evaluate submissions, reject the ones that won't work for us, and extend an offer of publication to those that stand out. If the author accepts, we then send a contract to seal the deal.

  • Will my manuscript be edited prior to publication? Will a professional design my cover? The answer to both questions is: Absolutely! We produce high quality books, inside and out.

  • Does Journey offer an advance? At this time, no. However, we offer a higher royalty rate than most traditional publishers.

  • Will Journey help market my book? Yes, we consider ourselves partners with our authors, which means it's very important that authors are part of the process.

Submitting to Journey Fiction

As the name implies, we publish only fiction. (If you have a non-fiction book to pitch, visit our sister-site, Compass Rose Press.) What's our dream project? A multi-book series with the first two or three books ready to go so we can release them simultaneously. We encourage binge-reading!

Journey is looking for fascinating characters that grab readers and don't let go. We want stories that sweep us away and make us forget we're reading a book. Stories like that come in many different forms, so we're open to many different genres: Historical, Romance, Suspense, Mystery, Speculative, Inspirational, and combinations thereof. The spice/edge level of our books generally doesn't exceed a PG rating.

There are a few things we definitely are not looking for: Picture Books, Children's, Young Adult, Poetry, multi-media books (an intriguing premise, but one we're not equipped to handle right now), Historical Biblical fiction, Amish, or Erotica. (Sorry, you'll have to send your erotic Amish picture book somewhere else.)

Journey Fiction doesn't require submissions to come through an agent. However, we do expect them to be professional and polished.

Proposals should include :

  • a detailed synopsis and the first three consecutive chapters of the first book (if it's a series)

  • an overview of the rest of the series

  • a bit about you and your publishing history (if any)

  • your marketing ideas

Send your proposal (Word document)  as an attachment to contact@journeyfiction.com and use the word "Proposal" in the subject line. If you have any questions about the process, feel free to use the same address and ask. We're excited about the journey...how about you?

The Journey Fiction Wish List

We're now accepting submissions to our

Nosy Parkers mystery series.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Inspired by the famous Girl Detective, the members of the Olentangy Heights Girls' Detective Society, affectionately known as the Nosy Parkers, spent their formative years studying criminology, codes, and capers. Unfortunately, opportunities to put their unique skills to work were thin on the ground in the post-war boom of their little corner of suburbia and they eventually grew up to pursue sensible careers. But now, as the young women find themselves stumbling over dead bodies and into trouble, they need their sleuthing skills more than they ever expected.

GUIDELINES

  • These are historical mysteries set in the 1950s with a light inspirational thread.

  • Each author involved in the Nosy Parkers series writes about a unique gal in a specific location. For example, Lisa Karon Richardson's heroine is Gemma Gaines and the location is New York City.

  • Although all the women were part of the same club as girls, the novels don't have to connect to each other.

  • The series is inspired by Nancy Drew and the girls who grew up loving those stories. However, we never name Nancy. She is "the girl detective".

  • Before submitting your proposal, please be familiar with the series. Available titles are The Counterfeit Clue and The Case of the Clobbered Cad. More titles are set to release in 2020.

HOW TO SUBMIT

  • Send your proposal (Word document) as an attachment to contact@journeyfiction.com put "Nosy Parkers Proposal" in the subject line.

  • Proposals should contain:

    • At least one chapter of your proposed Nosy Parkers novel. Two chapters would be even better.

    • A full synopsis of the story including plot points, twists, and how it ends.

    • Your ideas for any future Nosy Parkers books featuring the same heroine.

    • Share something about yourself, publishing history, marketing ideas, etc.
